In the spring of 2002, after 14 years, & a long search, I was reunited with my childhood horse Spicer. At the time my husband Brantner & I were living in a tiny 1 bedroom apartment in Somerville, Massachusetts with 2 dogs & 2 cats. |
When Spicer came back to us she was not in great shape. Overweight & arthritic, she was cranky, badly behaved, & despondent. After a brief stay at an overcrowded stable south of Boston, Spicer's mood had not improved. I knew that what she needed was large pastures and friendly horses, and so we moved her 2 hours west, to Mt. Toby Stables in Leverett, where she was born, and where many of her relatives still lived. |
| Another 3 months went by & we realized Spicer had the right idea. We quit our jobs and moved west to be with our horse. |
| When I was reunited with Spicer I experienced the inexplicable feeling that anything can be accomplished, and from that conviction Red Horse Press was born.
|
| We were lucky enough to have spent the last seven years of Spicer's life with her, most of which she lived in a large paddock next to our house with her half sister Jackie and her adopted sister Calliope. Spicer died on May 1 of this year, 29 days before her 31st birthday. She was the love of my life, and will always be the spirit behind Red Horse Press.
